Jakarta, 8 May 2012 – Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world, and the fifth most common cause of death in the world. In Indonesia, Global Burden of Cancer reported the ratio of breast cancer was 26 in 100.000 women. Ironically, survey of Yayasan Kesehatan Payudara Jakarta, or Jakarta Breast Health Foundation, in 2005 showed that 80 percent of the population were not aware of the importance of early breast screening.
The high number of breast cancer cases gave reason for RS Pondok Indah Group, elements of the society, several companies with concerns of earlier detection of breast cancer, to bring about breast cancer awareness movement. Some of the public figures involved were Andien Aisyah, Andra Alodita, Becky Tumewu, Melinda Babyanna, Miund, Ligwina Hananto, Paquita Widjaja, and Stella Rissa; they positively grabbed public’s attention especially women, to better care for their breast health. This movement titled Kampanye Delapan (Deteksi Berkala Payudara Anda), or Campaign Eight (Regular Screening for Your Breast), aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Every month on the eighth, women were reminded of self breast examination or SADARI.
Keeping in mind the increasing number of cases, with the assured initiatives, RS Pondok Indah Group facilitated Kampanye Delapan by spreading this information to public. “RS Pondok Indah Group took initiatives to remind women for regular self breast examination. As an institution that cares for your health, we proudly support the movement. Breast cancer patients are increasing in Indonesia, and also in our hospital. Sadly, new patients only came when they were in their late stages. Therefore, again we need to emphasize the importance of early screening as it is the prevention for women. The sooner the breast cancer was detected, the better chances the recovery,” said dr. Yanwar Hadiyanto, CEO RS Pondok Indah Group.
“If you have symptoms of swelling in the whole or parts of breasts, skin irritation, tenderness in the breast or the nipple, retracted nipple, nipple or breast skin turning red, scaly or thick, nipple discharge other than breast milk, and lump in the armpit, ask for immediate examination. Although not all of the lumps are cancer, but we need to be alert,” explained Dr. Sonar Sonny Panigoro, SpB.Onk of Rumah Sakit Pondok Indah – Pondok Indah.
“The American Cancer Society (ACS) encouraged women over 20 years performed self breast examination every month. Women over 30 years were encouraged to do routine screening at least once a year. Women in their 40s with higher risks of breast cancer, with unhealthy life style, should do routine screening, at least once a year. That is, after 5 years, screening is recommended once a year; between 3-5 years, every 6 month and below 3 years every 3 month. Breast cancer early detection comes with options of mammography, breast ultrasound, MRI and 3D Sonomammogram,” said Dr. Adji Saptogino, Sp.Rad of RS Pondok Indah – Pondok Indah.
Several methods of examination which were widely known includes self breast examination, clinical breast examination, mammography, breast ultrasound, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The latest method of breast cancer early detection is 3D Sonomammogram – a state of the art 3D ultrasound imaging to gather, analyze and report detailed anatomy volume of breast.
“This equipment is able to give a comprehensive 3D breast imaging, with a relatively brief period of 15 minutes. The imaging included a whole breast coronal anatomy – which could not be delivered by conventional ultrasonography method – enabled us to learn more details of breast tissue anatomy and architecture,” said Dr. Rahmi Alfiah Nur Alam, SpRad of RS Pondok Indah – Puri Indah.
With 3D Sonomammogram, RS Pondok Indah Group can provide more accurate and detailed diagnosis for public. RS Pondok Indah – Pondok Indah also has a specialty clinic for patients with breast disorders and complaints, that is Aesthetic, Plastic, Breast Clinic. This clinic has developed a modern surgery techniques with oncoplastic approach, such as breast substitution from patient’s body fat, so that patient can still have their breast intact, not needing an artificial breast.
This clinic also provided breast cancer screening with a non-radioactive media examination such as High Definition-MRI 1,5 Tesla, using magnetic fields and radiowave for a multi projection imaging. HD-MRI 1,5 Tesla is also used for post-mastectomy care and breast reconstructive surgery (including silicone implant). By using HD-MRI 1,5 Tesla, there will be no more pain as it is experienced in conventional mammography.
This clinic is well equipped with other up to date facilities such as Mammography, USG, Stereotactile Diagnostics, also minimally invasive surgery with mammotome, bringing a more thorough, accurate and prompt breast tumor and cyst surgery.
As shown in Indonesia health profile in the year 2008 by the Ministry of Health, breast cancer is the first of ten cancer in hospital inpatients from 2004 to 2007. The high number of breast cancer in Indonesia, also in RS Pondok Indah Group, urged RS Pondok Indah Group to hold a seminar titled “Current Update Detection and Treatment of Breast Cancer” on last Tuesday, 1 May 2012.
This seminar was attended by more than 150 doctors and nurses from RS Pondok Indah – Pondok Indah and RS Pondok Indah – Puri Indah, discussing the latest technology and management of breast cancer.
“Women tends to have a higher risk for breast cancer than men, since they go through changes in estrogen and progesterone hormones. Women at higher risk also are someone with family history or personal history of breast cancer, long term post menopausal hormonal therapy, previous history of chest radiotherapy at younger age, pregnancy at older age, and not breastfeeding. In addition, other factors that increased the risk of breast cancer are unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking, alcohol consumption and lack of exercise,” said Dr. Sonar Sonny Panigoro, SpB.Onk of Rumah Sakit Pondok Indah – Pondok Indah. This seminar also talked about several examination method to identify breast cancer such as Clinical Breast Examination to identify any abnormalities in size, shape, breast skin or nipple changes; Mammography with low-grade-X-ray to look inside the breast bringing out black and white images on film which is interpreted by a radiologist; Breast Ultrasound with sound wave to scan breast then projected on screen in black and white; Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) using magnetic fields and radiowave instead of X-ray for a more detailed imaging.
“Besides the above methods, we have the latest breast cancer early detection method, that is 3D Sonomammogram – an imaging equipment with a state of the art 3D ultrasound technology to gather, analyze and report a comprehensive breast volume anatomy,” said Dr. Angela Umali Crisostomo, M.D, President, Diagnostic Breast Imaging Society of the Philippines, one of the guest speaker in the seminar.
Other quality of 3D Sonomammogram is the result can be semi-automatically and comprehensively recorded in Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS®) for clinical purposes. BI-RADS® is a classification of American College of Radiology (ACR) for reporting mammography screenings.
